in how federal elections are conducted across the country.
Increase voter participation by making Election Day a clearly recognized national civic event.
Reduce barriers for working families if the day were made a federal holiday or accompanied by requirements for reasonable time off to vote.
Strengthen civic engagement** by emphasizing that voting is an important responsibility and right in a democracy.
Improve public awareness because voters would have a clear, nationally recognized day to focus on elections.
However, the United States currently allows states substantial authority over election administration, including early voting and absentee/mail voting. A national voting day would therefore need to be designed carefully so it **expands access without eliminating voting options that people already rely upon.
